A team of students from Charles Henderson High School have come together to form a competition robotics team. The team will participate in the BEST Robotics competition in Dothan on Oct 23. Students, teachers and volunteers met on Sept. 13 to organize their efforts for the October 23 event.

Alissa Jordan, faculty sponsor of the robotics team, said, “Students at Charles Henderson have much to offer in both academics and athletics. I feel strongly that we should showcase their talents at every opportunity. For the next 35 days, a group of 12 students will meet to build a robot and create a plan for promoting their product.”

Best Robotics is a middle and high school robotics competition whose mission is to engage and excite students about engineering, science, and technology as well as inspire them to pursue careers in these fields. Through participation, students learn to analyze and solve problems utilizing the Engineering Design Process, which helps them develop technological literacy skills; skills that are in high demand in the workforce.

“In addition to having motivated students, we also enjoy tremendous support from the school system and community,” Jordan said.

“Dr. Linda Felton-Smith and Dr. Kathy Murphy have both been vocal supporters of this program from its very beginning. Also, we would be lost without mentors from the community volunteering their time and expertise. I am especially thankful to our mentors from the following companies: St. John Engineers, Techno-Logic, LLC, Conecuh Bridge & Engineering, and Lockheed Martin.”

The judging competition will take place on Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dothan Civic Center.
