Sales tax revenue for Troy is on the rise from a year ago, as revenue from the latest month collected sits at roughly $6.78 million, as opposed to the roughly $5 million collected last fiscal year.

City Clerk Alton Starling said that the difference is largely because of the one-cent sales tax that was not present last year.

However, the revenue generated by the one-cent tax is designated solely for maintaining Troy Regional Medical Center, which the city now maintains.

He stressed that the difference is not much in the long run, and that sales tax revenue is important to the community’s economy.

“Every person has a different view of sales tax. How much goes towards the government and so forth,” said Starling.

Roughly $5 million is distributed to various government facilities such as the recreational department, while the hospital receives roughly $1,052,000 million to help support and maintain its operations.
