Student lunches go through summer

Even though school is out for summer, local kids still have the opportunity to eat right thanks to the Seamless Summer Option.

“Anyone from zero to 18 can go out and have lunch at no cost,” said Pike County Schools Child Nutrition Director Brooke Terry.

That meal is available at Pike County Elementary School, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to noon.

The “Summer Feeding Program” started in the beginning of June and will continue through the end of July.

“The purpose is to give children a healthy meal,” Terry said of the program that also provides meals to students in summer enrichment programs.

Sara Wilson, Lunchroom Manager at Pike County High School has been supervising the effort.

“It’s been pretty good,” Terry said, “she usually feeds right around 100 children.”

Terry said the Summer Feeding Program strives to meet healthy nutritional guidelines.

“We are trying to base it on the Healthier U.S. Challenge meals,” she said.

That means each lunch will include one vegetable serving, one fruit serving and one whole grain each day.

To entice the kids, entrees such as hamburgers, pizza, spaghetti and chicken nuggets are served.

“We’re just excited that we’re able to do this for the community,” Terry said. “I hope we’re able to continue to see a good turnout.”
