Sometimes having a productive offense is not always the most important part of a team.

The Troy Darlings are finding that out.

In a process that started almost two weeks ago, the team is now in the final stages of preparing for their upcoming Sub-District Tournament.

“We have been practicing really hard the past couple of weeks,” head coach Shane Calhoun said Thursday afternoon. “It’s been hot, but we have been sweating it out and trying to get better.”

After the team’s showing in this past weekend’s warm-up tournaments, ‘hot’ would be a good adjective to describe how the team’s offensive is playing right now.

While the team won all three of its games on Saturday, it was the way it won two of its games that got the most attention.

Troy defeated Zion Chapel by the score of 17-2 and then came back to defeat Enterprise by the score of 21-7.

In each of those wins, everyone Troy player scored at least one run.

But while the offense was able to produce, Calhoun said the team’s play on the opposite side of the ball will determine what it does this summer.

“Defense is definitely a challenge in this league,” the coach said. The Troy team is made up of seven-and-eight-year-olds, so Calhoun said the best way to teach the girls about defense is through the fundamentals.

“We have been working with them to make good decisions and stay focused. But we have a lot of girls who have god arms and everyone has come a long way,” the coach said.

Troy will get a chance to show off both its offensive and defensive skills against a team it has already seen, in Enterprise.

The two teams will meet on the field at 7 p.m. in Crenshaw County today.
