Brundidge Pre-Minors look to improve in district tourney

While there will be 15 Troy recreation tournament teams in action this summer, Troy isn’t the only city in Pike County that will be trying to impress on the diamond.

Brundidge will have one team participating in the tournament season, as its pre-minor tournament team will play host to the District 9 tournament beginning Friday.

The team from Brundidge participated in a warm-up tournament this past weekend, but the results were not promising.

“It’s been going kind of rough,” said head coach Charles Wilson.

“We got started kind of late, but the kids are getting better.”

Brundidge began its recreation season in April, but the pre-minor league only had three teams, which led to just a 10-game regular season.

“With just 10 games, they don’t really have much of an opportunity to get better and be able to compete in a tournament like this one,” Wilson said.

While the team may have low expectations, that has not stopped it from working hard as it prepares for this weekend’s action.

And, through that hard work, flashes of greatness have been shown.

“We’ve been working on all of it, from hitting to fielding and everything in between,” Wilson said.

“I will say for 7 and 8-year-olds that they can hit and field. These kids can play, but they just get nervous sometimes, which is expected since they haven’t played a whole lot.”

However, with the team being comprised of 8-year-olds, winning is not the only goal of this team.

Rather, the Brundidge pre-minor team is going to focus on going out, playing hard and having as much fun as possible.

“We’re just trying to get ready and see what we can do,” Wilson said.

“Win or lose, this is all about the kids.”

The Brundidge team includes players Charles Brunney, Jazavian Gordon, Tyler Glover, Brandon Warren, Sankeithia Thompson, Tyree Warren, Tomrorian Pryor, Amaghie Lampley, Tyrese Johnson, Zequan Boyd, Rayshaun Reynolds and Jeremiah Foster.

Wilson is the head coach, while Jimmie Dixon, Alvin Johnson and Charlie Brunney are the assistant coaches.

The coaches are being assisted by Anthony Andrews and Tyrone Boyd.

The Brundidge team will take the field Friday night at 8 p.m. against Coffee County. The winner of that game will advance to Monday’s final winner’s bracket game, while the loser will play Monday in the loser’s bracket against either Crenshaw County, Troy, Eufaula or Greenville.
