Even though the season has been over for two months, baseball players still have a lot going on during the summer months.

Playing on traveling teams, staying conditioned for the new season, and signing scholarships are just some of the things going happening.

On Thursday afternoon, Quay Lawson was taking part in the latter as he took the first step in the next act of his baseball career.

The former Charles Henderson Trojan signed a commitment letter to play for Wallace-Dothan, a community college located just about an hour south of his native Troy.

“It was a long process, but it’s finally over with and I am happy,” Lawson said shortly after signing his commitment letter at the CHHS gym.

“They have a good baseball program and I am excited to be a part of it.”

This past season, Lawson was one of the big reasons why the Trojans were able to advance all the way to the semi-finals in the state tournament.

In 134 at-bats, the senior hit for a .328 batting average, had 31 RBIs, three homers and finished tied for the most triples, with three.

“All the seniors played a big role in this season,” head coach Derek Irons said.

“During his junior season, Quay was more of a role player for us, and he did his job. That season really prepared him for the success he had this season.”

While Lawson was able to contribute at the plate, Irons said a big part of his game came in the field.

“[Quay] led the way for us at the plate in a lot of ways all season long, but he and Chance Shaver were real cornerstones for us in the field,” he said.

“I never worried about Quay at second base – he always did an outstanding job there.”

The position he played so well at CHHS is also the position he hopes to play with his new team, the Governors.

This past season, WDCC advanced to the Alabama Jr. and Community College Conference State Tournament before losing to Chattahoochee Valley.

Before he heads to the school in the middle of August, there are a few things we wants to improve on so he can contribute just as much as he did for the Trojans this season.

“I want to become a better hitter and fielder,” he said.

“I think I can bring a lot to [Wallace-Dothan], but I am going to have to work hard to do it.”

However, in leaving CHHS, Lawson is not only leaving his teammates, but also his brother, Jalin, who is a rising junior and plays third base for the Trojans.

The two brothers played together this past season, and even though Jalin said he is proud of his older brother, he is still going to miss him.

“I want him to go there and have fun,” Jalin said.

“Hopefully, he will get the experience there that he needs to go further in his baseball career.”

“I learned a lot from Quay. He taught me how to be a good player and how to be a great teammate – I am going to miss him.”
