Friday morning, nearly 50 softball teams from six classifications were in Troy to compete in the softball South Central Super Regional.

By late Saturday night, 12 teams had won their way in to the state tournament.

This was the first time the regional tournament took place in Troy, and according to Parks and Recreation director Dan Smith, it was a success.

“This was the largest tournament of any kind that was ever hosted in Troy in the 20 years at the Sportsplex,” Smith said Monday evening.

“The crowds exceeded what was planned (for the tournament) – it was a sight to see on Friday night with Relay for Life going on at the same time as the tournament.”

“We received a lot of praise from the teams, the families and the AHSAA officials,” he added. “It was a great weekend.”

The six classification winners were, Maplesville from Class 1A, American Christian Academy from Class 2A, Sumiton Christian from Class 3A, Alabama Christian from Class 4A, Moody High School from Class 5A and Dothan High School from Class 6A.

The six runner up teams, who will also be advancing to the state tournament were Sweet Water, Horseshoe Bend, Dadeville, Corner, Chelsea and Northview.
