This past Thursday, college football players all around the country were at the mercy of both their televisions and cell phones.

This was the time of year where dreams are realized – where college stars take the next step and try to become NFL stars.

As the NFL Draft rolled into the weekend, there were many former Trojan players looking to see their name flash across the screen along with their new teams.

One of those players was quarterback Levi Brown.

With the second pick in the seventh round, the former Sun Belt Player of the Year was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 209th pick of the draft.

Shortly after being drafted, Brown said he is looking forward to the potential playing time he may encounter in Buffalo, thanks to a underachieving quarterback group.

“That’s the good thing about Buffalo, they don’t have an established starter and I feel I have a legitimate shot at being able to do something up there,” Brown said.

“My first goal is to be one of the top three quarterbacks and my second goal is to work my way up to the back up position and then hopefully to the starter.”

With the selection, Brown became the first skilled offensive position player to be drafted out of Troy since wide receiver Orlando Parker in the 1994 draft.

Many draft experts had the former Troy quarterback going somewhere in the fifth or sixth round, and while Brown knew he might have to wait a bit to hear his name called, he was still a bit anxious come Saturday.

“I wasn’t nervous or anxious at first,” he said. “I didn’t really know what to expect.”

“I was hearing if I was lucky, I would go in the third round, but if I was unlucky, it would be closer to the seventh round.”

Things changed however when Rusty Smith, the former Florida Atlantic quarterback, was taken ahead of Brown in the sixth round by the team Brown grew up with – the Tennessee Titans.

“That’s when I really got anxious,” he said about Smith being drafted before him. “It was a big shock to me.”

“There were a lot of reports (in Tennessee) about the Titans taking me and when they didn’t, it burned a little bit – but in the end, it all worked out,” he added.

Brown said his fandom with his home state team ended with that pick.

“I am not a Titans fan anymore,” he laughed.

“I got an especially good reason not to like them now. They passed on me, coming out of their own backyard, for a guy coming out of the same conference.

“That is something that is going to give me extra motivation to succeed,” he said.

Along with the motivation provided by the Titans, Brown also said the rest of the league has inspired him.

“I think there were something like nine other quarterbacks taken ahead of me – I don’t feel that way about it.

“I feel like I can be just as successful as any of the other guys taken before me,” Brown said.

As for his new team, Brown said both sides are excited about the future.

“We are all excited that it worked out,” he said.

“They called after they had made their sixth round pick and said they were considering me and hoped that I would still be around when it was their time to pick again.

“I got to talk to the owner, the different offensive coaches and they all seemed really excited that I was coming up (to Buffalo),” Brown added.

With the Bills, Brown will join two other former Trojans, cornerback and return man Leodis McKelvin, and former head coach Chan Gailey.

“It always helps to know someone when you are going somewhere new and trying to get your feet wet, I am looking forward to that,” he said about his former teammate in McKelvin.

“I’m just happy it all worked out in the end.”

Along with Brown, two other Trojans were selected on Saturday.

Cameron Sheffield was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round at pick 142nd while Jorrick Calvin in the sixth round by the Arizona Cardinals with the 201st pick.
