Coming into Thursday, the Zion Chapel Rebels had already clinched a regular season area championship by virtue of their win last week over the Goshen Eagles.

The Eagles were not intimidated, however, and managed to go to Zion Chapel and defeat the Rebels on their senior day.

Goshen got three RBIs from Shelby Jo Vinson, a great pitching performance from Alli Warrick, and picked up a 3-1 win.

“It was another game between two rivals, with pitching being the key,” said Goshen head coach Dee Hughes. “Our defense is really playing good ball right now, and I’m proud of that. We have a lot of girls stepping up in key situations, and that shows a lot of character.”

Goshen trailed 1-0 in the top of the fourth, had been held hitless by Zion Chapel pitcher Heather Hines until Rachel Senn hit a one-out single to left-centerfield.

Amanda Griggs then doubled to centerfield, giving the Eagles runners on second and third with Vinson at the plate.

Vinson doubled to right-centerfield, driving in two runs and giving Goshen the lead for good.

Vinson struck again with an RBI single in the top of the sixth to give Goshen some breathing room and a 3-1 lead.

It looked as if Zion Chapel would dominate early on, as the Eagles went 1-2-3 in the top of the first, and the Rebels immediately loaded the bases with nobody out in their first turn at bat.

Warrick worked her way out of the jam, however, striking out the next three Rebel batters to leave the bases loaded.

The Rebels loaded the bases again in the second when Hines reached on an error by the shortstop Griggs with one out.

Zion Chapel’s Kelli Behrens then fouled out to the third base side, which would have ended the inning if not for the error.

That error wound up costing the Eagles, as the Rebels scored on a passed ball to pick up an unearned run and give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.

Warrick got out of the second with no further, damage, however, and cruised from there.

“We’re used to pressure,” Hughes said.

“We’ve played in tournaments and played in games where we’ve seen that now, so it didn’t affect us like it used to.”

From the third to the sixth inning, Warrick gave up just one hit and no runs while the Eagle offense built its lead.

Warrick pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits, giving up no earned runs and striking out 12 while walking just three.

“When Alli’s on, she’s on,” Hughes said. “The umpire wasn’t giving her the movement early on, but he started to as the game went along. She had her movement fro the get-go, and she was real good today.”

Vinson was 2-3 with three RBIs to lead the Eagle offense while Senn went 2-4 and Griggs went 1-2.
