The Charles Henderson varsity tennis team had a strong showing at the 5A-Area 2 section tournament on Wednesday, helping the Trojans move to state competition.

In each of the nine brackets, CHHS had its players at the end, as the team had six singles winners and all three double winners.

The Trojans finished with 73 points, the most any team could win.

Eufaula and Carroll finished in second and third place, respectively, with 21 and 20 points.

This was the first time CHHS had swept the section tournament.

“We were optimistic but trying to be cautious going into the tournament,” head coach Robert Lewis said.

“We had won all of our section matches but realized that some of those matches were early in the season and an early contest is not always a reliable indicator of strength late in the season.”

Clay Berry, Davantez Jackson Jonathan Carswell and Robert Lee all cruised through their respective brackets as each won in two sets.

Tim Foster also won his bracket, however, had to do it in three sets, defeated his Greenville opponent, 7-6, 4-7, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8).

The doubles partners of Patrick Jackson and Berry also cruised to victory, winning 6-3, 6-0 over Eufaula, while Devantez Jackson and Carswell won 6-1, 6-1, over Greenville.

Lee and Tim Foster rounded things out for the Trojans’ doubles competition with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Valley.

“This same basic group won the section last year in a 48-42 contest with Greenville,” Lewis said.

“This team is much stronger than last’s years and we hope to make an impression at the state tournament.

“The state tournament is a whole different level of play but we hope to be building something with this group,” the coach added.

Both CHHS and Eufaula will head to Mobile for the AHSAA tournament.

The tournament will begin on Monday, April 26, at the Mobile Tennis Center.
