“Guys and Dolls” is coming to Troy University this week and tickets are going fast.

The Tony-award winning musical will be presented by Troy University’s Department of Theatre and Dance along with the John M. Long School of Music and is under the direction of Adena Moree, university director of theater. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 22, 23 and 24 and at 2:30 p.m. on April 25 at the Trojan Center Theater. The Saturday performance is almost sold out so everyone is advised to get tickets in advance by calling the Troy Center Box Office at 334-670-3293. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for Troy University students.

“Guys and Dolls” tells the story of Nathan Detroit, a gambler who is desperate to find money to pay for his floating crap game. Detroit bets Sky Masterson that Masterson can’t take a local Salvation Army girl, Sarah Brown, to Cuba. While Nathan battles with his fiancée of 14 years, Miss Adelaide, Masterson ends up taking Sarah to Cuba and falling in love.
When Masterson returns to New York, he bets all of his crap shooting partners that if he wins his roll of the dice they will all have to go to church and repent. However, if he loses, he will pay each of them a thousand dollars.

“Guys and Dolls” features a variety of show tunes including “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat”

Jenny Meadows, event publicity chair, said a couple of local talents would take the stage.

“Jim Hoyt, Troy University professor of marketing, will play, what he says, is the ‘token old guy,’ and Ginger Zingara, school of music instructor, will be a member of the chorus,” Meadows said.

Dr. Michael Hicks will be the music director and Ray Smith will conduct the orchestra.

Meadows said Brett Warnke will have a lead role in the play and he is very popular among those who are familiar with Troy University productions.

“Brett has a huge fan base and many people will want to come just because he will be on stage,” Meadows said.

Mary Catherine Chambliss will play Miss Adelaide; Jessica Threet will play Sarah and Trey Allen, Sky Masterson.

“This will be the last show at Troy University for set designer Bethany Wambles,” Meadows said. “She is an outstanding set designer and done a tremendous job here at Troy University.

“‘Guys and Dolls’ is a fun musical and we invite everyone to come out an enjoy the show.”
