The recreation baseball and softball seasons are in full swing as the end of April nears, and all the teams are hoping for a strong finish in the second half of the season.

One such team is the Mustangs of the Ponytail softball league.

In fact, the Mustangs are hoping for improvement even more than most teams, as any noticeable improvement could result in the team’s first win of the season.

Head coach Mark Jordan said even though the Mustangs have struggled thus far, the season has still been a success in many ways.

“We have not done as well as we would have liked, but the girls are having fun,” Jordan said. Even though we haven’t won a game yet, we’ve been right there knocking at the door a few times. But as long as the girls are having a good time, that’s all that matters.”

Since the team has come so close to victory so many times, Jordan said the girls have just focused on working on all aspects of their game in practice, in hopes that wins will soon come.

“We just try to work on everything we may mess up in a game,” Jordan said. “From batting to base running, and especially sliding. Sliding is a huge thing in this league. But, mostly we try to focus on our batting, which has struggled a little bit.”

While the Mustangs are aggressively pursuing their first victory, Jordan said the joy of coaching softball is about more than just winning.

“I’ve been coaching girls for several years, and I always enjoy it,” Jordan said. “I’m always excited, and sometimes I get more excited than they are. But, the really great thing about this has been building relationships with these great girls and all of their families.”
