Progress continues to be made on what will be the new home to the Troy City Board of Education.

“They are moving along on schedule,” said Troy City Schools Superintendent Linda Felton-Smith.

The new shape of the building is beginning to show at the old armory on Elba Highway at Jane Road.

“The addition you see on the front will be the board room and the conference room,” Felton-Smith said. “We are still hoping for completion in July.”

Apart from adding the addition, the old armory itself has been redesigned for offices and a new roof has been installed.

The superintendent said that spaces will be used for central office employees including the board’s maintenance and finance departments, and the parking lot will be used to park school buses.

The current city BOE central office is located on Elm Street and is owned by the city

“We will completely vacate that property,” Felton Smith said.

Whaley Construction was the winning bidder for the project, which was approved at a cost of approximately $1.2 million. A state issued bond from 2007 funded the improvement.

Felton-Smith said that people were welcome to see the finished product.

“Once the facility is completed and we move in, there will be an open house for the community to come in.”
