The Charles Henderson soccer team was in action on Tuesday night, playing in its final regular season game of the year against Providence Christian at home.

It was also a chance for the fans to see the team’s six seniors one more, as Andrew Bentley, Clayton Baker, Joseph Sharp, Lloyd Shillabeer, Michael Salmon and Douglas McClendon were on hand for their final regular season match as Trojans.

Things got off to a fast start for CHHS as the team took a 3-0 lead to the half thanks to a goal from Shillabeer and two from McClendon.

However, the second half was a much different story.

The Eagles were able to overcome the deficit to the tone of five goals, and in the process defeated the Trojans, 5-3.

“In the beginning of the game, I thought we did a good job of playing our game,” head coach Olaf Lieb said. “We communicated well and did a good job of controlling the ball – I was very played with how we played.”

“In the second half, we didn’t communicate well and we fell a part,” the coach added.

Even with the loss, Lieb said this was something he did not think would be a step back for his team with the approaching playoffs.

“We are still dealing with fixing some things and finding our new identity.

“We can’t play like we did in the second half but overall, I saw more good than bad in the game,” he said.

Since the Trojans lost Salmon to broken leg on April 1, CHHS has gone 0-1-1 with a tie to Houston Academy on the road.

Still, Lieb believes as long as his team stays focused on the task at hand, they will be successful in the second season.

“We can’t fall a part defensively like we did (Tuesday night). We can’t let our emotions take over

“We have to be able to play a complete game, and I know this team can do that,” the coach added.

The Trojans will be back in action in less than two weeks when the state playoffs will begin on Tuesday April 27.
