Alice Sherrod creates wearable and functional art through her craft. Her company AHS Design was born in April 2008 after an intense period of learning the craft of jewelry making. Sherrod believes that she has always been a designer and the art of design has taken many forms in her life. As an lover and collector of jewelry, Sherrod’s passion for jewelry formed an aspiration to create her own wearable art.

Sherrod was born and reared in Dothan, Alabama; went off to college; and returned to Alabama intermittently until 2007 when she relocated permanently to Birmingham. During the intervening years, Alice reared four sons, divorced, and received three master’s degrees (psychology, architecture, landscape architecture) and a Ph.D. This led to her teaching landscape architecture at Texas Tech University. As a University landscape architecture instructor, Sherrod emphasized principles of design in her classes. Now she applies those same principles of balance, rhythmic movement/ repetition, scale and form in her jewelry creations. Sherrod states that she is not hesitant to break these basic rules if art demands it. Her love of colors and patterns as well as multiple mediums and materials enables her to create unique and attractive jewelry.

According to Sherrod, many years ago, I listed four things that I wanted for my future life: creativity, flexible hours, variety, and travel. That is exactly what I have now that I am designing and creating unique jewelry in Birmingham and selling my work in galleries and juried art festivals.”

Sherrod prides herself on the fact that most of her pieces go from jeans to cocktail and everything in between. Most of her creations use combinations of copper, brass, silver and/or aluminum. Check out Sherrod’s work at her website www.ahsdesign.com.

” I love coming to Troy for TroyFest”, says Sherrod. “Everyone is so nice to the artists and goes out of their way to make us feel at home. I also love small towns that maintain their historical charm, as Troy does, while participating fully in the 21st Century. Troy is a great place to visit, and I look forward to coming here each year. Thanks to everyone in the area who makes this a success by attending the festival!”
