The Concerts at the Studio in downtown Troy offer a wide variety of music and now we have jazz.

At 7 p.m. on Monday, April 5, the John M. Long School of Music and the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Center will present frequency in concert. The concert is free and open to the public.

The vocal jazz ensemble, frequency, is devoted to the performance of contemporary choral pieces with an emphasis on highly stylized and advanced vocal jazz, said Dr. Diane Orlofsky, director of Troy University choirs.

“This vocal jazz ensemble is designed to provide a quality performing experience for advanced students of all majors, utilizing excellent repertoire from a wide variety of challenging, cultural and cutting edge contemporary choral styles,” Orlofsky said.

The ensemble will perform jazz standards such as “Blue Skies” and “Come Rain or Come Shine.” Musical theater numbers will include “All I Ask of You” from “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Somewhere” from West Side Story.

“Wayfaring Stranger” will be among the contemporary arrangements of familiar songs.

Wiley White, Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Center development director, said the Concerts at the Studio series brings the vast array of talent at Troy University to downtown Troy.

“The first Concert at the Studio was in December 2005 and we can thank Jim Zingara for the idea,” Orlofsky said.

“The concerts have been very successful and we often have a packed house. Attendance has grown over the years as more and more people are realizing how much fun the concerts are.”

White said the partnership between the university and the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Center increases the number of cultural arts opportunities for the Troy and Pike County communities.

“We have five Concerts at the Studio each year and Jim Zingara presents concerts featuring many different instruments,” White said.

“We also have the community youth orchestra perform at The Studio, as well as special performances.”

White said the concerts are community events and everyone is invited to come early, enjoy light refreshments and the fellowship of friends and neighbors.

“We hope that everyone will come and see what all of the talk is about,” White said.

“Once you get here, you’ll be glad you came. And the frequency concert Monday night will be outstanding. These young people are so talented and so enthusiastic. They will lift your spirits.”
