The Charles Henderson Trojans came into Friday’s double-header against Carroll just one win away from clinching a playoff birth.

The Trojans took care of business early in game one, winning 9-2 and in the process securing their post season spot.

In the second game however, the Trojans were unable to come out on top, falling to the Eagles 5-4.

“The most important thing was to clinch a playoff spot, and we did that,” head coach Derek Irons said Friday night.

“The second game was a test of our competitive character. And it was disappointing to see the way we competed.

“We had no focus or enthusiasm (in the second game),” the coach said. “We just tried to coast our way through. “For every team on the schedule, we have to play well – or we will lose.”

With the road split, CHHS, who is ranked No. 2 in the 5A poll, is now 23-6 on the season.

Harrison Reeves got the win for the Trojans in the first game, pitching a complete game while allowing one earned run and striking out three.

At the plate, Quay Lawson was perfect, going 4-4 with three RBIs, while K.D. Edenfield finished 2-4 with an RBI and four runs and Chance Shaver finished 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.

“The first game stands out more,” Irons said.

“As frustrating as the second game was, we are in the playoffs. It doesn’t matter what you do in the regular season, as long as you make it to the playoffs.”

Blake Hutchinson got the loss for CHHS in the second game, tossing five and a third innings, while striking out three and giving up three earned runs.

Jalin Lawson finished 2-3 with an RBI.

Chase Connell finished 2-3 while both Mitch McLeod and Shaver went 1-3.

McLeod drove in one run while Shaver drove in two.

“Focus is really our biggest thing,” he said.

“This is the time of year where we need to be fine tuning (focus).

“Hopefully, we will be able to step back and look at this loss and turn it into a positive for the rest of the season.

The Trojans will be in action again on Thursday at Frazier Field against Rehobeth, with a scheduled 5 p.m. start time.
