CHHS softball drops three-straight at Auburn Round Robin

What started out as good day for the Charles Henderson softball team turned sour fairly quickly.

The Trojans were participating in the Auburn Round Robin on Saturday and after defeating Beauregard in the first game 5-1, things began to fall a part, as CHHS dropped the next three games to Auburn, Russell County and Beauregard.

Things started to go wring in the second game against Auburn when the Trojans’ 2-0 lead fell through in the bottom of the second.

Auburn used three consecutive doubles to take the lead and eventually win, in its last opportunity.

Following that game, CHHS lost to Russell County 9-5 and then to Beauregard 8-0.

“We were just unable to recover after that second game,” head coach Chad Lapp said Saturday evening. “We struggled at the plate the rest of the way.”

The loss drops the Trojans to 8-12 on the season.

“We are going to find out what team this is (in the upcoming weeks),” Lapp said.

“We were just unable to rebound after we got down, and when we are in a position like that, we have to be able to fight back and we were unable to do that.”

This was the first time all season CHHS had played more than two games in one day and, according to Lapp, it showed.

“We have to work on being a better tournament team,” the coach said. “We lost our intensity out there – it looked like we got a little tired.

“We didn’t play our game (later on in the tournament). We didn’t play to our potential.”

Overall this past week, the Trojans finished with a 4-4 record.

Even in defeat, Lapp said there were some positive aspects gained from the Round Robin.

“I thought during the first two games, we really played as team,” he said. “That is something we have been hoping for, for a while.”

“This team is starting to come together an that is going to be important for the rest of the season,” he added.

Lapp and the Trojans will be back in action on Tuesday as the team plays host to Trinity at the Troy Sportsplex.
