Day four of the Southeast Alabama Invitational played out a lot like the others for the Charles Henderson Trojans, however this time there was more drama involved.

The Trojans came out on the top over Slocomb Friday night, improving its record to 4-0 in the invitational, but did so in its last opportunity, coming from behind to win 4-3.

Trailing by two runs, 3-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning, CHHS was able to rally thanks to a led off single by K.D. Edenfield.

Chase Shaver followed with an RBI double, cutting the lead to just one run.

That deficit would not last for long, as the very next batter, Nathan Barron would tie the game at three a piece with an RBI double of his own.

The Red Tops intentionally walked Mitch McLeod to get to Quay Lawson.

Their strategy paid off, as Lawson would hit into a 6-4 Fielder’s Choice to give the Trojans one out with a runner on first.

Slocomb again intentionally walked a CHHS batter, this time Chase Connell.

Fortunately for the Trojans, the strategy did not result in an out.

Jalin Lawson stepped up to the plate and thanks to a shot into center field, ended the game as he drove in his older brother for the game winning score.

“It was very encouraging to see how we handled adversity (Friday night,)” head coach Derek Irons said after the game. “We have proven that we can be a late inning team throughout the season.”

But even in victory, Irons said there are still some things his team needs to improve upon.

“We have got to turn our focus to see how much of the adversity that we are face, is actually being brought on by ourselves.

“We can’t be complacent and be happy with what we have already done this season – there is still more work to be done,” the coach added.

Harrison Reeves got the win for CHHS, pitching just one inning of work, the top of the seventh, after replacing Blake Hutchinson, who pitched six innings, striking out eight in the process.

“Both of the guys did their part (Friday night),” Irons said.

“They each through more walks than we would have liked but they both kept us in the game and more importantly in a position to win the game.”

The win improves the Trojans to 18-4 overall on the season as the team will move on to the semi-finals today against Rehobeth, with a start time of 11 a.m.
