A Troy home caught fire late Tuesday ending in what Fire Chief Thomas Outlaw said is likely a complete structure loss.

Around 9:30 p.m. the Troy Fire Department was called to a fire at 112 Sunstreet, but by the time firefighters arrived, the back of the home was engulfed in flames, Outlaw said.

“When we arrived, it was already burning through the ceiling at the back side of the house,” he said. “They were lucky it was the early part of the night. Had it been later, they might have both been killed.”

Troy locals Betty Collins and Charles Cannon have lived in the home for the last two years. Cannon was in the process of purchasing the residence for himself.

Cannon said the two were watching TV when the fire broke out.

“It started back behind the stove when I first got up,” he said.

Outlaw said it took about 45 minutes to an hour to completely stop exhaust the fire.

The cause is unknown at this time, but he said the fire department will continue the investigation Wednesday.
