The final step in rezoning approximately 40 acres behind Krystal and the Troy Marketplace Shopping Center could be taken at the next Troy City Council Meeting.

Walt Stell of Environmental Precision moved the request through the Troy City Planning Commission in January.

The rezoning could mean several developments for the area, including an eventual alternate route to the Troy Sportsplex, and the communities surrounding it.

“We’re going to leave a right-of-way there for them (the city or state) to connect it, if they choose to,” Stell said.

That right of way would be an extension of Franklin Drive.

Franklin runs parallel to George Wallace Drive starting a few blocks north of University Avenue, moving south to U.S. Highway 231 where it ends near Krystal.

Stell said there are some ideas in the works for the construction of a road connecting U.S. Highway 231 and Enzor Road.

“They have several different plans pending funding,” he said.

“One of them is that way.”

Stell added that another possible origin for the route could be the road behind Lowes.

There are no positive plans yet as to what is in store for the land around the right-of-way, but Stell said that options will be left open.

“We really don’t have anything in mind right now,” he said.

Stell said that some large parcels will be left that could possibly be used for independent living or senior housing, while smaller parcels will be available for commercial business opportunities.

A public hearing will be held on this and two other zoning issues at the council meeting Tuesday at 5 p.m.
