This past January, Outdoors Without Limits held its second annual Ultimate Deer Adventure Hunt and in the process, bringing together disabled hunters from all around the South.

CEO of OWL, Kirk Thomas, said the event was a great success.

“The event went great,” Thomas said. “It really did.”

Thomas said despite rain on each day of the event and muddy conditions, there was still great turnout.

“We had 118 disabled participants,” he said. “We had over 141 registered, but the rain just kind of knocked some of them out.”

“They all enjoyed it and it was just a tremendous opportunity,” Thomas said. “You got to give due diligence to them. They were out there wanting to take advantage of this opportunity and did so.”

Thomas said that each disabled participant had a non-disabled partner with them.

“Not only did they get out there and have to weather the storm,” he said, “but the guides and the landowners did, too. Everybody stepped up to make it a total success.”

Thomas said that the hunters harvested over 50 deer.

Thomas said that without the landowners, partners and volunteers the event wouldn’t have been possible.

“You can’t say enough of the landowners that actually stepped up and provided and the volunteers that came in,” he said. “We have a lot of partners that stepped up and participated and without them we couldn’t do this event.”

“It takes a total effort from everybody to pull this thing off.”

Thomas also praised the president of the Troy chapter of OWL, Terry McPherson, who has been nominated to serve on the national board of OWL.

Thomas said that next year’s event has already been booked and will be held at the Cattleman’s Association building on Highway 231.

Thomas said that the event would not be held in January, but in December on Dec. 2 to 5.

Thomas also said that there is another event planned for the end of June in Troy.

The event will be a bass fishing tournament that will have 11 professional bass fishermen participating and a disabled individual participating on each boat.
