Each year, the Pike County American Cancer Society board recognizes caregivers who are nothing short of angels on earth to those who are battling cancer and their families.

Caregivers are most often family members, but friends also gladly give care to those they love.

Claire Murphy, board member, said each caregiver deserves special recognition and many of them are recognized at the annual Cancer Survivors Dinner. However, each year, one caregiver is singled out for his or her commitment and devotion to the one in their care with the Relay for Life Caregiver of the Year award.

“The Caregiver of the Year award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the caregiver through his or her loving and compassionate support to someone who is facing cancer or who has faced cancer,” Murphy said.

That caregiver is representative of all of those who provide love, support, encouragement and care to those who are battling cancer or have fought the battle.

The Pike County Relay American Cancer Society board is now accepting nominations for the Caregiver of the Year award.

“To nominate a caregiver for this award, you must fill out a nomination form and, in 500 words or less, describe why your nominee is deserving of this award,” Murphy said.

Nomination forms may be picked up at The Messenger on South Brundidge Street in Troy, WTBF Radio on the square in Troy or by calling Murphy at 566-1213.

Nominations must be in to the American Cancer Society office in Montgomery by April 22.

“This award is a very important and meaningful part of the Cancer Survivor dinner, which will be held on May 4 at Park Memorial United Methodist Church,” Murphy said. “We encourage those who have a caregiver that has made a difference in their lives and the life of a loved to nominate that person for this special award.
