Day two of the Trojan Classic had its fair share of ups and downs for the Eagles of Goshen High School.

The Eagles were able to come from behind in its first game against Elmore County to advance, but were unable to do so in its second game of the single elimination tournament.

After giving up four quick runs in the first inning to Elmore County, the Goshen softball team came to life in the second day of the Trojan Classic.

The Eagles were able to string together six consecutive hits, sending six runners home an din the process taking a 7-4 lead, and one that it would not give up as the Eagles would go on to a 11-6 win.

As she did on Friday, Alli Warrick was able to lead her team on the mound.

“Alli had several big strikeouts all throughout the game,” head coach Dee Hughes said afterwards. “She was really big for us today.”

Hughes said the struggles her team had early in the game were fixed by adjustments.

“(Elmore County’s) pitching was a little slower than we thought it would be, and it took us a while to really get ready for it,” she said.

“But when we did, we were able to take control of the game – I am proud how well we hit the ball this morning.”

One of the biggest hits of the day came off the bat of Nioka Slater, who hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to extend the Eagle lead to 11-4.

“This was a big confidence booster for us,” Hughes said.

As it turned out however, that would be the last time the Eagles would be victorious on the day.

In its showdown with Citronelle, a Wolverine home run late in the game proved to be the difference, as Goshen fell 9-6.

Again, Warrick took the mound for the Eagles, but struggled early on, allowing a lead off home run to start the game.

Citronelle would catch a break in the second when a called strike-three got pass the catcher Amanda Griggs, allowing two runs to score to make it 3-0.

The Wolverines would add three more runs in the innings.

Goshen would not go quietly into the night though.

In the bottom of the second, with the bases loaded, Slater again would deliver, this time with a bases clearing triple, cutting the lead in half at 6-3.

The Eagle rally would continue, as Griggs, Rachel Senn and Kathlyn Thomas would drive in a run, to tie the game at six after two innings.

The score would remain that until the top of the fourth, when a Warrick pitch was hit over the fence in left field.

Citronelle would score two more runs to put the game out of reach for good.

The Eagles finished 2-2 in the Trojan Classic.
