It was a brisk night at Pike County Cattleman Park Saturday, but plenty showed up to support the youngsters there for the 68th annual Pike County Steer and Heifer Show.

B.J. Rice of Lanett, Ala. was the judge of the event which included competitions in categories such as showmanship, average daily gain, and of course, the best steers and heifers.

Troy’s Cody Johnson was the big winner of the day racking up over $600 in award money. In this his final show as a competitor, Johnson enjoyed plenty of success showing the grand champion heifer, winning his class in showmanship and winning the reserve champion trophy with a native steer.

10-year-old Josh Graham of Tennille had his share of glory as well, as showing the grand champion steer.

Morgan Dubose showed the reserve champion heifer in what was also her final competition.

The night was bittersweet as participants and spectators said goodbye to Johnson, Dubose and one of the show-coordinators Tammy Powell.

Johnson and Dubose, veterans of the coral, presented Powell with a plaque in appreciation of the work she’s done with them over the years.

Powell surprised the two shortly thereafter with shiny belt buckles to compliment the plethora of trophies and ribbons they’ve earned over the years.
