If the students in the Troy City School System were asked to trade an upcoming holiday for a “snow day,” they probably wouldn’t hesitate. And, that’s exactly what they will do.

On Monday night, the Troy City Board of Education amended the 2009-2010 academic calendar to designate Good Friday, April 2, as the makeup day for the snow day on Feb. 12.

Superintendent of Troy City Schools Dr. Linda Felton-Smith said she and Dr. Mark Bazzell, superintendent of Pike County Schools, agreed on April 2 as the makeup date for the snow day. Both systems have students who attend the Troy-Pike Center for Technology and would be affected by the makeup date.

The board approved a Board Member Training Policy, which Roxie Kitchens said is a policy that the board is already following.

“This just makes it official,” she said.

The academic report was given by Julie Simmons from the Troy-Pike Center for Technology.

Simmons said the Technology Center is no longer a place where students who can’t make academic grades are sent. It’s no longer a place where girls sew aprons and boys make squirrel-shaped chopping blocks.

“We teach the academics and how they relate to the skills that are taught,” Simmons said.

“We are teaching skills that will fill the needs of local industries and businesses so that students will have jobs to come back to and keep the economy growing.”

Working from a rather short agenda, the board accepted bids for the Managed WAN Services, Basic Maintenance of PBX Services and e-mail Hosting Services and heard reports from the principals at Troy Elementary School, Charles Henderson Middle School and Charles Henderson High School.

All reported their students are gearing up for upcoming achievement testing. Black History programs are set for this week at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Troy Elementary and at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at CHMS. CHHS celebrated Black History Month Friday, Feb. 19.
