This past weekend, the Charles Henderson freshman baseball team was in action, looking to win its first tournament of the early season.

While the Trojans came up short, thanks to a one-run loss in the championship game to host team Brantley, the team may have caused just as much damage if it had wne the championship.

In the five games the Trojans played in the Brantley tournament, it outscored its opponents 35-9 and in the process improved its record to 6-1 on the early season.

“We feel great about what the guys were able to do this weekend,” head coach Robert Snyder said Monday afternoon.

“We had the youngest team out there. Everyone did their jobs right – and I am very proud of how they played,” he said.

In the championship game, down by just one run, the Trojans had an opportunity to tie the game however that rally was stopped short thanks to a controversial call at home plate.

“Whenever stuff like that happens, it’s always magnified,” Snyder said.

“We had opportunities all throughout the game that we were just not able to take advantage of.

“You can’t pin the game on opinion calls like that,” he added.

With it still early in the season, there are little things each team has to improve along the way.

One of those things for this season’s club is comradery amongst the players.

“We have talked to the guys a lot about teamwork and how important it is to work together,” Snyder said. “And I think the team really understands that.”

“Along with doing things right on the field, good team chemistry is something that will put us in a good position to win on the field.”

One of the aspects the coach said he is most impressed about so far is the ability for the team to make contact with the ball.

“We are hitting the ball really well right now, I think that is pretty evident, but we are putting pressure on the defense to make plays.”

Now, the team will forward to its next game – which takes place against a team they have already seen once this season, Dothan.

“The thing you worry about when playing a team in a short amount of time is having a let down,” Snyder said.

Last week, the Trojans defeated the Tigers 15-1.

“All teams are going to get better, and I know Dothan is. We just have to make sure we stay focused mentally and not expect [Dothan] to lay down,” he said.
