A face recognized all across the country made a stop in Troy Wednesday, all in a name of good cause.

Chad Brokaw, more commonly known as ‘Chad’ from the Alltel Wireless commercials, made a stop in Troy yesterday to hang out with some fans, watch a basketball game and, more importantly, join the battle against cancer.

Brokaw presented a $1,500 donation to the Kay/ WBCA Cancer Fund on behalf of the Alltel employees in the Troy area at halftime of the game.

The donation was a part of the “Pink Zone” initiative, which took place last night for the

second-straight year during the Troy and Middle Tennessee game at Trojan Arena.

The Kay Yow/ Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Cancer Fund is a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause, according to the press release issued for the event.

Kay Yow was the former coach for the North Carolina State Wolfpack who passed away last year after succumbing to breast cancer.

Brokaw has been traveling around the country to make different donations for the Cancer Fund.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I have had the opportunity to go to places I probably would never go to, all in the name of a good cause.”

Brokaw has already made stops in Dothan and Enterprise, as well as, Albany, Ga., Missoula, Mont. and Farmington, New Mexico.

“The Southern Hospitality has been awesome,” said Brokaw, who was born in Illinois but currently lives in Los Angeles.

During Brokaw’s first visit to Troy, he made stops at several places including the Alltel store in Troy, as well as Santa Fe Steakhouse and Country’s Barbeque. He even chatted with Ralph Black at WTBF about the donation Wednesday morning.

Brokaw has been with Alltel since 2006.

In what started out as auditioning for the part of a store manager in one commercial, turned into many, and not long after, Brokaw became ‘Chad’.

As for his name, Brokaw said he had no relation to the other Brokaw people have seen on their television screens for the past couple of decades – Tom Brokaw.

“I get that a lot,” he said with a laugh. “But we are not related.”

“I am sure [Tom] is a great guy, but I like my dad and oddly enough, Tom’s daughter’s name is Andrea, which is the same name as my sister – so that’s another thing we have in common,” Brokaw laughed.
