The Brundidge City Council authorized Mayor Jimmy Ramage and City Manager Brit Thomas to pursue the purchase of approximately 2 acres of land on Lee Street Tuesday.

“The property has two buildings on it with concrete floors and new metal on the tops,” Thomas said. “It will take care of some current storage needs we have, and it’s something that we can use in the long term.”

One immediate use for the buildings on the property would be storage.

“We have some equipment that we use seasonally that is just parked except when they’re in use,” Thomas said.

Thomas also said the city has two antique fire trucks that could be stored at the site to free up space for the fire department.

Thomas was also optimistic about the future value of the property. “Mostly it’s down the road for the city,” he said. “I’m convinced it’s very valuable to us. It would be a long-term benefit for the city.

The total cost of the property would be $75,000. The city would be required to pay $25,000 initially and then the remaining balance over three years at a 3 percent interest rate.

Thomas also reported record-breaking power usage in the city.

“There were 12 or 13 days we were below 25 degrees. During that time our power requirements went up about a third,” Thomas said. Thomas explained that residents should expect energy costs for this period to reflect the influx in usage.

“Your electric consumption will most likely have increased, which will lead to an increase in your bill,” he said.
