Former Troy resident and University of Alabama law student Sharon Eliza Nichols’ idea to start a Facebook group about the plethora of grammatical errors in every day life has become a success.

“It started with a Facebook group, “I judge you when you use poor grammar,” Nichols said.

According to Nichols, she was a college student in Charleston, S.C. and saw a sign that said, “Now excepting applications.”

“I thought, ‘someone should know better,’ so I started the Facebook group,” Nichols said.

Now the group has nearly a half million members.

“I did not expect it to get that big,” Nichols said.

Nichols, who is in her third year of law school said she was contacted by a New York Times reporter in her first year of law school about the group.

According to Nichols, she was contacted by her agent, who thought it was a good idea for a book.

“I encouraged all the members to take pictures,” Nichols said.

Today, the group has compiled more than 10,000 examples of poor grammar, from business signs to T-shirts to hair gel labels.

Those photos, along with short captions for each picture comprise the book aptly titled “I Judge You When You Use Poor Grammar.”

The publisher, St. Martins, ordered 15,000 books, which sold out and now have 7,500 scheduled for the next printing.

The book is inexpensive at $9.95 a copy.

“We marketed it toward an impulse buy,” Nichols said.
