For Christians all around, the true meaning of Christmas is prevalent.

It symbolizes the birth of a savior, Jesus Christ.

The familiar story can be found in the Bible, in Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:1-20.

“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord,” according to Luke, Chapter 2.

Southside Baptist Church Pastor Bo Weed said from a Christian perspective Christmas is really a focus on the coming of Christ.

“We understand that Christ was God’s gift to us,” Weed said.

Weed said that unfortunately Christmas has become commercialized.

“Unfortunately we have some commercialization about giving and getting presents,” Weed said.

From Black Friday through Christmas Eve, residents flock to local stores to buy the perfect gift.

The holiday season has long been synonymous with the season of giving, but Weed said the true meaning is sometimes lost.

“It’s kind of like you having a big birthday celebration and everyone else getting presents but you,” Weed said. “Of course we can’t give Jesus a present, but we can give him our hearts.”
