The holiday season is a time for giving, and that’s just what a group of Charles Henderson High School students did Tuesday night – give to a family in need.

Several CHHS clubs joined the Student Government Association in providing one family — a mother and four children — a Christmas.

The students provided a Christmas dinner, presents and CHHS Principal David Helms read “The Night Before Christmas” to the family.

Among the clubs involved were SGA, FTA, Interact, FBLA and Environmental club.

Members of the SGA said the group always sponsors a family, but this year they wanted to do more.

“Each person brought food and gifts,” said SGA Treasurer Morgan Shows.

The students organized the dinner themselves.

“I’m proud of all of them. They have done a magnificent job,” said SGA Adviser Betty Wagoner “They planned it, and they executed it.”

The students said they enjoyed reaching out to a family.

“I enjoy reaching out and helping others and doing good things for others,” said SGA Secretary Alex Graham. “It makes you realize Christmas isn’t all about you getting gifts.”

Shows agreed.

“Christmas isn’t all about receiving. It’s about giving,” Shows said. “It makes me feel better to know I can reach out to a family and help them.”

SGA President Taylor Smartt said, “It feels good to give back to the community when families are in need during the holidays.”

Nick Jones, event organizer gave all the credit to the clubs.

“We had a lot of help from the clubs at school,” Jones said. “Some of the SGA reps and my friends made the food. The special education department made the desserts.”

Jones said the best part was when Santa came out and the children’s faces lit up.

SGA vice president Keona Collier, Lauren DeBruyne, class presidents Tara Youngblood, Courtney Wood, Mary Beth Wasden, Olivia Hudson and SGA representatives Brooke Byrd, Joe Bradley and Keyara Wallace also helped out, along with the clubs.
