There was little roam for the Goshen High School Eagles to soar on Friday.

The team, who was participating in the Pea River Tournament, fell to the Elba Tigers 50-34.

“I think we played halfway decent [on Friday],” head coach Jonathan Deveridge said.

“We just had a hard time finding the basket.”

The Eagles didn’t have any players score in double-digits in last night’s loss.

Brandon Alford led the way with nine points, while Antonio Brown and Reginald Foster contributed seven and four points, respectively.

The loss not only dropped GHS from the weekend tournament, but also dropped its record to 0-2 on the season.

Deveridge said his team’s youth played a large part in the defeat.

“We are dealing with a young team this season – hard to find a lot of joy out of a 16-point loss, but I think we played pretty well defensively.

“Elba was bigger than us and we did what we could with their size,” the coach said.

“We have got to spend some more time working on the offense, we have got a long way to go.”

One of the biggest problems the Eagles had on the night was dealing with the Tiger defense.

“[Elba] played a real tough man-to-man defense and that forced us to make a lot of turnovers,” Deveridge said. “We had way too many turnovers.”

Now, GHS prepares for its next test.

On Tuesday, Bullock County High School will travel to Goshen.

Bullock County was the 4A state champions two seasons ago.

“I was telling my guys after the game, the season only gets tougher from here,” Deveridge said.

“We have got to get better or it is going to be embarrassing on our own court,” he added.

The two teams will meet at Goshen High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
