It took every ounce of energy the Troy Trojans had, but in the end, the team came out on top and in the process made history.

With the team’s 48-31 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, Troy clinched its first undefeated season in Sun Belt play.

“We are blessed to be sitting here,” Blakeney said at the team’s press conference on Monday afternoon. “All the credit goes to the players and coaches. I am so very proud of them.”

“It was a game that was almost three different games,” the coach continued.

“But in the end, we were able to regroup and take control,” he said.

With the win, the 2009 Trojans became the first team to win nine games playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision [FBS] and became the first time since North Texas in 2004 to go undefeated in conference play.

“We have very few gimmie games in [the Sun Belt],” Blakeney said.

“The league is strong from top to bottom. There was never a team that I was not concerned with – and I think it will continue to get better.

“It took a lot for our program to get to this point, and hopefully we can continue forward,” he added.

Now, for the third time in four years, the Trojans will be bowl bound, even if the team is unsure which bowl it will be playing in.

The team has yet accept any bowl invitation, however there is a clear-cut decision, according to the coaches and players.

“It would be hard to pass up the Super Dome,” senior linebacker Bear Woods said. “I think the rest of the team feels the same way.”

With the win, the Trojans are guaranteed no worse than the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, which will be played on Dec. 20, however the team may receive invitations to other bowls.

“I don’t know exactly what the bowl situation is,” Blakeney said.

“There is some question to where we might end up but that is up to the powers at be.

“Regardless, we are very blessed to be in this position,” he said. “It’s all positive [for Troy] – there will be a lot of talk about Troy all across America.”
