Recreation soccer teams of all ages were in Dothan this weekend looking to bring back a championship to their respective towns.

Fortunately, one of those teams was from Troy.

The 18-U soccer team took home its third straight ARPA State Championship after it defeated Eufaula 11-1 on Sunday.

“The thrill of this never gets old,” said head coach Doug McLendon. “We had a close win over Prattville yesterday to get us to this game, and I’m just real proud of our kids for having the nerves of steel to get us here.”

Douglass McLendon led the way for his team, scoring four goals.

There were two other teams that were looking for championship glory, however, fell short. The 13-U and the 11-U girls both lost to Dothan in their championship games, 2-0 and 1-0, respectfully.

Earlier in the weekend, both teams dominated its opponents.

The 13-U team had one match before its Sunday championship game, and thanks late heroics from the team’s goalie Jason Fleming.

After the game finished in regulation tied 1-1, the teams took turns taking penalty kicks.

However, after the teams tied in penalty kicks, 3-5, it went into sudden death.

After making a save on the first kick, Fleming took his own try at it and found the back of the net, giving his team the stunning victory.

The 11-U girls took care of business early and often against its two opponents, Opelika and Jacksonville.

In its first match of the weekend, the girls won 7-0 over Opelika and continued its shutout streak against Jacksonville, winning 3-0.

“They’re heartbroken right now, but they tried hard,” said head coach Tim Bobo after the 11-U girls’ championship game. “We expected a close game, but we just ended up on the wrong side of it this time. If we played them multiple times, I think we’d come out on the other side of it.”

The three other teams competing over the weekend were the 9-U girls, the 11-U team and the 15-U team. The 9-U girls fell to Fort Payne, 1-0, on Saturday morning. The 11-U got started off on the right foot, beating Centre 7-0 in its first game, however could not keep its momentum up, dropping to Prattville, 2-0.

The 15-U team gave up two goals in both the first and the second half, losing 2-1 to Dothan.
