Mr. Joel A. Witherington, age 86, of Troy passed away November 8, 2009 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery.
Funeral Services for Mr. Witherington will be at 2:00 p.m. , Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the Southside Baptist Church, with Reverend Bo Weed officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the Green Hills Memorial Cemetary.
Mr. Witherington proudly served his country as a World War II Veteran. He served many years as Executive Director of the Troy Housing Authority. He was a past President of the Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities; Past President of the Alabama Public Housing Directors Association; and a past member of the Housing and Urban Development Regional Advisory Council. He was very involved in the community, while volunteering many hours at the Pike Pioneer Museum. He directed both the Troy and Choctowhatchee Regional Libraries as past Board Chairman. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and served many years as Secretary of the Troy Rotary Club. In 1983 Mr. Witherington was recognized as Pike County Man of the Year. He was a faithful member of Southside Baptist Church.
Mr. Witherington is preceded in death by his wife Ann F. Witherington and his parents, Robert and Mittie B. Witherington, and one brother, Byron E. Witherington.
He is survived by his son John H. (Barbara) Witherington of Troy, daughters Nancy W. (Barron) Strother of Santa Rosa Beach, FL., JoAnn W. (Jimmy) Newman of Troy, his grandchildren, John (Ivy) Witherington, Jr., of Troy, Ashley (Jeff) Tate, of Troy, Shelli S. (Matt) Allen of Marietta, GA, Morgan S. (Will) Palmer of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Jay (Melissa) Strother, of Albany, GA., Chris (Stephanie) Giglio of Troy, his great grandchildren, Jon Matthew Allen, Strother Allen, Ann Rose Allen of Marietta, GA, Fordham Palmer of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Jack Strother of Albany, GA, Luke, Seth and Joel Tate, Haleigh Giglio and Adrienne Giglio, Jack and Laura Ashley Witherington of Troy. His sister Linda W. (Jim) Boswell of Roswell, GA, Linda Myhand, a loving caregiver and part of the family and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be, John Witherington, Jr., Chris Giglio, Jay Strother, Jeff Tate, Matt Allen, Will Palmer and Durwood Kelly. Honorary Pallbearers are members of Southside Baptist Church Men’s IV and V Sunday School Classes. Memorials may be sent to Southside Baptist Church, 522 South Brundidge Street, Troy, Alabama 36081.
