The Troy University Gospel Singers will be 100 voices strong today when they close out the New Harmonies Concerts on the Square in downtown Troy. The Community Gospel Choir will also be featured.

The gospel groups will sing familiar gospel songs and spirituals as well as less familiar ones but all are part of America’s roots music.

Today’s concert is the final in the six-concert series. It will begin at 5:15 p.m. and conclude around 7:15.

“The Troy University Gospel Singers have been around for a while,” said Lewis Webb, director. “We have performed at African-American festivals and done a lot of concerts in the tri-city areas of the state.”

The Gospel Singers have been featured on the cover of Jet Magazine and also had the honor of singing at the funeral of Rosa Parks.

“We were also honored to sing at the opening of the Children’s Wing of the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery,” Webb said.

The program for today’s concert will feature American’s gospel and spiritual roots music.

“We’ll be doing works by William Dawson, Diane White, Raymond Wise, Donna Lawrence and Kurt Carr,” Webb said. “Some of the selections will be ‘Soon I Will Be Done,’ ‘Jesus, He Rose from the Grave,’ ‘It’s Me! It’s Me! It’s Me, Oh Lord’ ‘Giants’ and many more.”

Everyone is invited to attend the closing concert at the Stephens Gazebo and celebrate America’s gospel and spiritual roots music.

Richard Metzger, executive director of the sponsoring Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Center, expressed appreciation to the Troy University Gospel Singes, the Community Gospel Choir, Lenny Trawick, the Jim Bell Trio, Tommy Stewart and band, Dan Fraley and Stanley Smith and Company and Willie Felton and Company for being a part of the promoting and preserving America’s roots music through the New Harmonies Concerts on the Square.
