Final day of Troy Invitational cancelled

Heavy rains forced the final day of the Troy University Women’s Golf Invitational to be cancelled, meaning that while Troy fell short of a team title, one of its golfers did take home the individual title.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t get to decide our own fate,” said head coach Matt Terry. “Mother Nature decided it for us.”

Louisiana-Monroe took home the overall team title after shooting a first day total of 31-over-par 607.

Troy trailed by just two shots at 609, but rain prevented the Trojans from having a shot to overtake the Warhawks.

Sophomore Haley Lawrence took home the individual title after shooting a two-round total of one-over-par 145.

She edged out Louisiana-Monroe’s Angela Drane, who shot two-over 146.

Junior Liz Balkcom also finished in the top 10, shooting a nine-over 153, which was good enough to put her in a tie for tenth place.

All in all, Terry said he was mostly pleased with the Trojans’ play.

“I thought the teams’ performance was really good,” Terry said. “We made some little mistakes and I think No. 15 and No. 8 cost us the golf tournament.”

The tournament at the Troy Country Club was the first time the tournament had been played in Troy, and Terry said the event will return to Troy in the future.

“It was a great experience,” Terry said. “The girls truly got to play their home course. It was just a great experience, and we’ll be back next year about the same time at the same place.”

With the Invitational now behind them, the Trojans will not play again until February. However, Troy heads into the long break on a high note.

“We’re excited about the way we left off our season,” Terry said. “We ended the fall with probably our best scoring average in six years.”

Troy women’s golf will return to action in late February at the Lady Jaguar Invitational in Mobile.
