Six games into the season, few would have imagined the Charles Henderson Trojans in the predicament that it faces heading into the team’s homecoming game against Rehobeth.

Thanks to last week’s loss on the road to Beauregard, the Trojans have lost three straight games, putting its record at 1-5, 1-2 in 5A Region 2 play.

One of the reasons for the Trojans’ struggles is due to anemic offense.

During that three-game losing stretch, CHHS has scored just one touchdown, which came in a 31-7 loss to Valley back on Sept. 18.

The defense has kept the games close however. The last two Trojan defeats were by a combined 20 points, 13-7 against Theodore and 14-0 against Beauregard.

“Well, [the Beauregard loss] was a big loss for us,” head coach Hugh Fountain said.

“If we would have won, we would have been able to control our own destiny, but that’s not the way it played out. “Now, we have to focus on our next game and take care of what we can control,” Fountain added.

Heading into this week’s homecoming game against region foe Rehobeth, Fountain is hoping that his team is able to put together the right ingredients necessary to create a win.

“When you are where we are right now [1-5 record], every game is of concern,” Fountain said.

“Rehobeth has played better than us this season. The real key for us is to try and get better in the fundamentals – we haven’t done a good job of tackling, blocking and running the football all season long.”

The Rebels come into the Trojans’ homecoming game with a 2-4 record, 1-2 in 5A Region 2 play.

The team will come to Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium coming off a 22-19 loss to Washington last Friday. “[Rehobeth] is an improved team from last season. They are playing hard right now despite what their record may be – I think they are a pretty good football team,” the coach said. “But nothing heals the way you feel like [after a lose] like a victory,” Fountain said.

A loss to the Rebels would be detrimental to the Trojans’ playoffs hopes but going into the game, Fountain said he doesn’t think the season is in jeopardy just yet.

“Obviously, it is still mathematically possible [to make the playoffs],” the coach said.

“But we have to get help from other people.

“In this season though anything could happen – we have to just get better as a football team.”

The coach continued by saying that there is still a lot of fight left in this team. “I don’t think the season is over, and the kids don’t think the season is over. We have a couple up hill battles coming up this month but no season is over until the last bell is rung.”

The Trojans will look to celebrate its 2009 homecoming game with a win against Rehobeth at 7 p.m. in Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium.
