The Pike Animal Shelter’s fall Bow Wow Pow Wow was nothing short of a tremendous success.

That’s how Founders Society Chair Donna Schubert described the quarterly event designed to find forever homes for shelter pups.

“We had 16 dogs at the Bow Wow Pow Wow, and six of them now have forever homes,” Schubert said. “And, all of the dogs got a good flea bath and were vaccinated for kennel cough. They enjoyed a day in the sunshine and all of the adoration they receive. So it was a happy and positive day for the shelter dogs. And, we were very pleased at the number of dogs that were adopted.”

Schubert said all of the adoptable dogs were adults, making them harder to place than puppies.

“Those who adopted were looking for companion dogs and all of six of the dogs had been companions, and now they are back into loving homes,” she said. “What fills my heart is the diversity of those who adopted these shelter dogs. Those who adopted were college students, a young couple and families. It’s encouraging that people of all ages are willing to provide a loving home for an animal that has been abused, neglected or abandoned.”

Members of the Troy Animal Shelter and Troy animal control officers, Ken Andress and Carroll Connell, were on hand to discuss the adoption process with those wishing to adopt and make sure they understood the responsibilities that come with dog adoption.

Schubert expressed appreciation to the members of the Troy Animal Shelter Coalition and the Troy University Animal Advocates for their dedication and hard work at the Bow Wow Pow Wow.

“The Troy University Animal Advocates is a campus organization that is basically a chapter of our organization,” she said. “Those young people were out there from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. giving the dogs their baths and helping set up and take down. They worked all day long, and we really appreciate their efforts.”

Ten of the 16 shelter dogs went back to the Troy Animal Shelter at day’s end and are still waiting for their forever homes.
