School children in the Pike County School system will soon have the opportunity to be checked for abnormalities.
Kid Check, sponsored by Pike County Schools and the Troy University School of nursing will be a three-day event this year, and will include Goshen Elementary, Banks Primary and Middle schools and Pike County Elementary.
The event will be held Sept. 29 at the Banks schools, Oct. 6 at Goshen Elementary School and Oct. 20 at Pike County Elementary School.
According to Brooke Terry, child nutrition program director for the school system, last year’s program was such as success they decided to incorporate Goshen and Banks.
“Last year we had one at Pike County Elementary School. It went over well,” Terry said.
Terry said different stations will be set up and the nursing students will check for abnormalities.
“We are working with Troy University School of Nursing and Judy Bazzell,” Terry said. “If an abnormality is found, the student will have to be screened by an RN.”
Students will be screened for height, weight, vision, blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, lung sound, heart rhythms and possibly hearing.
“We will also have a representative from Sorrell Dental,” Terry said.
The representative will be on hand to discuss proper dental care with students and will provide toothpaste and brochures.
Terry also said All Kids has donated toothbrushes and bags.
“We are very, very excited about the new schools involved,” Terry said.
Parents who wish for their children to participate will have to sign a letter giving consent.
