As summer turns to fall, the Troy Recreation Department is currently hard at work to provide the Troy community with activities and programs for all ages.

“We here blessed with a wonderful community,” the center’s director Dan Smith said.

“We have a lot of different things to offer [to the community], and we hope to continue to see growth and participation.”

Some of the activities that Smith was referring include youth football, which is beginning its second season, youth soccer, which will have games begin next week.

Throughout the year, the center offers many different youth sports as well including basketball, softball, baseball, swim teams and a gymnastic program.

“I believe that recreation is an important element to life,” Smith said.

On top of the youth sports offered the center also offers adult coed softball.

“We try to offer a variety of activities and programs for the community,” Smith said.

Two big additions the center is working on for the foreseeable future are a three-mile walking trail and a Miracle League field.

A Miracle League field is a rubberized baseball field where children with disabilities can play.

Each field is custom-designed with wheelchair accessible dugouts and a flat surface to eliminate any barriers to wheelchair-bound or visually impaired players, according to the Miracle League’s website.

“This is something we are very excited about and have heard a lot of positive things from the community,” Smith said.

In the coming year, the center will be playing host two events.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s super regional softball tournament will be taking place next May and the Boys 9-to-10-year-old Dixie Pre-Minor State Tournament will be taking place later on next summer.

“These events have the opportunity to have a positive economic impact for the community,” Smith said. “And we look forward to bringing these activities to the community.”
