Local school children will have the opportunity to get protect themselves from the H1N1 flu next month.

Pike County Schools Superintendent Mark Bazzell the school system is coordinating with state health officials to provide swine flu shots to students in the school system.

“We going to be doing (swine) flu immunization clinics in October,” Bazzell said.

Tentative dates are Oct. 19 or Oct. 26 for Pike County Elementary School, Pike County High School and Banks School, and Oct. 20 or Oct. 27 for both Goshen schools.

“We will be communicating with parents when we have more information and sending home literature,” Bazzell said. “Parents will have to provide approval.”

Troy City Schools Head Nurse Melissa Scarbrough said the school system would be participating in a swine flu clinic, but they are still waiting on the state to determine exactly when.

“They have told us that they hope at the state level to receive the immunizations by mid-October,” Scarbrough said. “Then they will pass them down.”

Scarbrough said Troy City Schools is in Area 10.

“They want to complete the vaccination schedule within two weeks,” Scarbrough said. “We do know that we will be at the bottom of the two weeks.”

Scarbrough said parents can expect to receive a letter telling them when the vaccines will take place, and parents will have to sign a consent form in order for their child to receive the vaccination.
