At first, it looked as though the night might turn badly for the Pike County Bulldogs.

On the team’s first possession a fumbled pitch set up the Headland Rams on the Bulldogs’ own 25-yard line.

However, the Bulldogs were able to hold the Rams and set the tone for the rest of the night, as Headland’s offense never seemed to be able to put anything together.

The Bulldogs used their wing-T formation and a heavy dose of quarterback Josh Parker to run all over the Rams’ defense to the tune of a 28-0 victory.

The Rams defense never could answer the Bulldogs’ monster running game of Marquavous Knox and Parker as the two accounted for all four of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns and 113 combined rushing yards.

Still, as lopsided as the final score was, the contest was not out of reach until the fourth quarter, as the Headland offense had plenty of chances to climb back into the game.

Two turnovers in the red zone, three in all, cost the Rams the game, as the Bulldogs stingy defense lead by senior linebacker Spencer Bright held the Rams offense at bay.

The Rams managed just 44 yards passing and 29 yards rushing.

Nevertheless, the biggest of the ram’s turnovers was a second quarter muffed punt on Headland’s 27-yard line, which set the stage for a Parker touchdown.

Despite his Bulldogs’ 3-0 start, head coach Eddie Stephenson was still agitated by what he called “sloppy play.”

“I have to hand it to Headland, they had a great scheme tonight, although I’m happy with the win, we still have a lot of things to work out on both sides of the ball,”

“Ill let them have the weekend to rest but come Monday well get back at it,” the coach added.

When asked how he planned to keep his team grounded after a fast start, the coach replied, “Well that’s the mystic of coaching it’s a challenge but I know we can handle it.”

Parker praised his team’s leadership.

“As a senior, I know I have to lead but I can’t do it alone.

“Thankfully, we have a lot of great leaders on this team like [Spencer] Bright and Marquavous [Knox] to help lead us,” the senior added.

This victory however may have come at a cost, as both junior running back and linebacker, Jacquez Walker and junior offensive lineman Stephen Jones were both injured and did not return to the game.

Stephenson said while it’s to early to tell, he told reporters that both players had probably sprained their ankles and more details would be available later.

The Pike Co. Bulldogs will travel to Slocomb next weekend to try and improve its record to 4-0.
