The Pike County Bulldogs will look to improve its early winning streak to three games in a row this Friday against the Headland Rams.

After narrowly escaping Carroll in week one, Pike County showed what it’s offense could really do last against Wicksburg.

The Bulldogs ran for 291 yards, and won big, 42-7.

“The more we play, the better we get,” PCHS head coach Eddie Stephenson said.

“We have a young team but they have stepped it up and are taking care of the fundamentals [in the first two games].”

This week, the Bulldogs will face a Rams team that as Stephenson put it, “is a greatly improved team from last season.”

“Headland has a lot of talented and skilled players,” Stephenson said.

“They are a dangerous football team, we are going to have to be ready to play come Friday.”

Last season, the Rams finished with a 2-8 overall record.

Headland comes into Friday night’s match up with a 1-1 record, beating Ariton 27-13 in the first week before falling to Slocomb 13-6 last week.

Stephenson said that his defense is going to need to be able to limit the Rams’ talent on offense if the Bulldogs want to improve to 3-0.

“They are going to try and spread the football using multiple receivers and running backs. The key of us defensively, is to make our one-on-one tackles.”

Offensively, Stephenson said his team is going to continue to do what it has done all season – run the football.

“That’s what we do best.

“I have no idea if [Headland’s defense] will be able to stop us [the ground] but we know exactly what we are going to do and our kids are getting better and better at it each week,” the coach said.

In two games, Stephenson’s hybrid wing-T offense has rushed for 561 yards on just 77 carries.

Two of the main rushing contributors for Pike County have been senior quarterback Josh Park and senior running back Marquavous Knox.

In the two games, Parker has rushed for 137 yards while Knox has rushed for 167.

Both have two rushing touchdowns as well.

Even with the current success the Bulldogs are experiencing, Stephenson said there is still room for improvement.

“It is a different atmosphere [at PCHS] than last year,” Stephenson said.

“We expect to win here and the more wins we have the more confidence we will get.

“We have to realistic though, there is still a lot of mistakes that we need to fix.”

“This [week’s game] will be a good test for us,” the coach added.

The Bulldogs will play host to its third opponent in as many weeks this Friday when Headland comes to the town, with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
