This Friday, two class 2A region 3 teams will be looking for their first win of the season, as Goshen will travel to Zion Chapel.

Coming into the game, both teams lost their respective season openers last week and will be looking to exact some revenge.

Goshen traveled to Abbeville, however never had a lead once during the game and fell to the Yellow Jackets 21-13 despite a second half offensive surge.

The Rebels trailed New Brockton by seven at the half last week before allowing 35 unanswered points and losing 42-0.

“We have got to play better fundamentals,” Zion Chapel head coach Mike Waters said.

“I think we played well for a half, but we have to find a way to put a complete game together.”

Zion Chapel had a total of 183 offensive yards compared to the Gamecocks’ 331.

“I think the players gave a good effort,” the coach said.

“After watching the tapes, I think we are just a few plays away from turning negative yardage into positive yardage.”

As for the Rebels’ upcoming game against Goshen, Waters said his team is going to need to stay strong mentally.

“Goshen has a lot of great athletes and is coached very well. They are very quick.

“We are going to have to execute defensively, especially against their running backs [Marcus Jackson and Reginald Foster], if we want to have a chance to win,” Waters added.

As far as how the offense will fare against Goshen, Waters said it would have to start at the line of scrimmage.

“We have to get some continuity with our offensive line.

“We have had some issues getting the kids to play together because of illness, but once they get some time together I think we will be able to do some things,” the Rebels coach.

Like Zion Chapel, Bart Snyder and the Goshen Eagles will be looking to right the wrong come Friday.

“Practice this week has gone pretty well, the kids are doing what they are supposed to do for the game and staying positive,” Snyder said.

“We had a chance to win but there were a few mental lapses during the game [against Abbeville]. We have worked on those lapses at practice this week, and we fill pretty confident going into the game against Zion chapel.”

Snyder said one of the biggest hurdles the team will have to overcome this season is getting that first win.

“We have a young group here who are searching for the first win.

“Once we get it, I think we will be able to move a little further along,” the coach added.

After viewing tapes of the upcoming opponent, Snyder said he noticed several different qualities about Zion Chapel.

“Zion Chapel is a very disciplined team,” Snyder said. “In order to win, we are going to have to execute in every part of the game.”

“They are big up front, both offensively and defensively – it’s going to be a physical game for sure.

“They don’t have too many weaknesses but it is going to be important for our defense to put their offense in long situations,” the Eagles coach added.

The two teams will meet up on the gridiron at Zion Chapel on Friday at 7 p.m.
