Math isn’t something many students choose to do willingly, especially not in the summer.

But at Pike Liberal Arts School, that’s just what many fourth, fifth and sixth graders have been doing.

PLAS held its first-ever summer math camp this month in effort to enhance math lessons.

Headmaster Ceil Sikes said the Math Mania Program was a big hit.

“We have exiting fourth through sixth graders who are participating in the math camp,” Sikes said.

Though, the math brush-up is not taught from books and in traditional ways, the students still learn math skills that can be applied to everyday life.

“We are not using traditional ways of teaching during this math camp,” Sikes said. “ For example, we are using food for divisions and fractions.”

“This is a free program presented to the students of Pike Liberal Arts school, it is more of a refreshers program for math not a summer school.” Sikes said.

During the first week of the math camp only seven students participated, but the second week attendance was doubled.

“It seems that the more parents and students hear about the program, the more people show up,” Sikes said. “This program is helping the students remember and retain what they learned during the regular school year, and that will help everyone in the end.”

There is one week left out of the three-week program for students to participate in.

“Even though the camp is almost over, we see it as being a great success,” Sikes said.

“We hope to continue doing programs like this, and next year we will be trying to expand and incorporate different subjects in the summer programs, such as English and Science,” Sikes said.
