Andalusia keeps hopes alive

Post 80 Andalusia kept its state title hopes alive Saturday, defeating Post 11 Florence 9-4 on the second day of the Alabama American Legion Junior State Tournament.

The big inning for Andalusia came in the second, when Post 80 scored five runs on four hits to take a 5-0 lead.

Post 80 never looked back, leading the rest of the way.

The big second inning saw Colter Poole double down the left field line with the bases loaded to drive in the first three runs of the game.

Joshua Dewrell followed that with an RBI ground-rule double to make it 4-0.

Dewrell would later come around to score on an RBI single by Robert Woodall, Jr.

Andalusia would tack on three more runs in the fourth inning, as Poole hit another RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Dewrell to make it 7-3.

Andalusia pushed the lead to five runs on an RBI double by Gunter Davis.

Florence could only muster one more run the rest of the way, giving Andalusia the win.

Andalusia used a strong pitching performance from David King, Jr., who pitched six innings, giving up just one earned run on nine hits. King also struck out 11.

Poole, who went 2-3 with four RBIs, and Dewrell, who went 2-4 with two RBIs, led Andalusia’s offense.

Andalusia will play Pool A leader North Limestone Sunday at 10 a.m., and must win to have any hope of playing for the state championship.

Florence will wrap up its tournament against Tuscaloosa Red at 7p.m. Sunday.
