Coach Doug McLendon praised his defense after the win.

“Our defenders really pressured the ball tonight, stealing the ball and starting counterattacks by Scott and Alex that helped build a big lead,” McLendon said. “We were able to play some kids in new positions and coast near the end, so it was good for us to finally get a relief from all the close games.”

Troy Indoor U18 dropped its first match of the season despite a furious rally at the end.

Led by goals from Michael Salmon and Josh Taylor, and assisted by Douglas McLendon and Mitchell Payne, Troy fell just short of Montgomery U18 Red, 8-7.

Troy fell into a first-place tie with its opponent.

“This game was a rematch, and I think both losing teams in the series were missing key players at the time, so the rubber match will be an heroic battle,” McLendon said. “I can’t wait. We fell short tonight with a smaller roster, but our guys really showed a lot of character in the comeback. I’m very proud of them.

“If you haven’t seen them play, you should come out and see it. Indoor is fast-paced and high-scoring as soccer goes. It appeals to the American in us.”

Troy U18 returns to action Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. and both Troy teams play Thursday.

The U14 team plays at 7:15 p.m. and the U18 team plays at 8:15 p.m.
