Troy Boys snag championship in thriller

The Troy Boys Tournament team took out Dothan 10-8 in the district championship game Saturday night at the Troy Sportsplex.

Troy jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first three innings, but Dothan outscored Troy 5-1 in the next two and a half innings to tie the score at 8-8. Troy’s Jalin Lawson and Josh Starling scored in the bottom of the sixth and Lawson shut the door on Dothan in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

Robert Benton and Lawson opened the scoring in the first inning to give Troy a 2-1 lead after Roquel Marsh scored in the top of the first. Taytom Barnes and Tehron Stallworth scored in the second to get the lead back after Ethan Holland and Jordan Tharpe scored for Dothan. Brantley LeCroy, Starling and Reid Dickey each scored in the third to open up Troy’s biggest lead of the night.

But Davis Swicord and Jacob Hicks scored in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-5. Lawson Stewart scored in the fourth. Charles Swicord and Gavin Gunter scored for Dothan in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-7 and Marsh tied the score in the sixth.

But Troy would not be denied a trip to the state tournament and Lawson and Starling crossed the plate for Troy.

Troy will get a bye in the first round of the state tournament in Eufaula. They opens play July 18 against the winner of the District 7 vs. District 5 game that will be played July 17.
